But Mr Baird quickly went on to the front foot, making jokes about his misadventure and inviting others to join the fun.

“Note to self: when fetching a glass of water late at night, don’t walk down the stairs in your socks with the lights out,” he posted on Facebook.

“Diagnosis: fractured vertebrae.

“Prognosis: slowish recovery but no need for surgery.

“Yeah, I know… The punchlines for this pretty much write themselves… “Knock yourselves out (I almost did!).”

A spokesman for Mr Baird told said the premier was “sore, but mobile”.

The tumble comes just days after Warringah MP Tony Abbott came off second-best when he fin-chopped his foot in the surf at Manly.

Mr Abbott required treatment at Manly Hospital, including several stitches to a gash.

Mr Baird is expected to be in Parliament later today to discuss the proposed ban on greyhound racing that would come into effect in July next year.

It is not yet known when Mr Baird will return to the surf.
