The ashes of Lachlan Burleigh, 17, who had dreamt of becoming a marine biologist were sprinkled into his beloved waters, as part of a huge tribute to the young men who died in a horrific car crash last month.
The poignant event was attended by hundreds of friends and family at Mona Vale beach.
Paddlers spread out in the waves on surf boards and created a circle by linking arms.
Some of Lachlan’s family were on a boat provided by Mona Vale SLSC.
The three northern beaches men were returning from a dance party in the Blue Mountains with two others when the Mitsubishi Outlander lost control and slammed into a Subaru Imprezza on Bells Line Of Road.
The driver and the front passenger survived.
Ben Sawyer, 19, and Luke Shanahan, 21, were also killed.
Some paddlers carried flowers and Lachlan’s family wore flower garlands.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
However, in an interview, Lachlan’s father Michael urged other young people not to be scared of turning down lifts if they were unsure about the safety skills of the driver.
A barbecue was later held at the surf club.
Organiser Geordie F-Smith said: “Thanks so much for everyone coming to the paddle … was an amazing day and you’re all absolute legends!
“So stoked with how many great people turned up to show support and thanks so much to everyone involved and helped out.”
Lachlan’s brother previously said how his favourite memories of his brother involved the ocean.
Jayden Burleigh said: “Standing at the water’s edge with our arms around each other, watching the water washing over our feet, washing away troubles at work and school – that is my most enduring memory of Lachie.”
A memorial concert featuring local bands is also planed for the boys in October, according to a Facebook page that has been set up.
