A CONVICTED killer has been sentenced to at least 11 months in jail after lunging at a man with a broken beer bottle last November.

Kenneth Stephen Richards, 45, was sentenced in Manly Court on Thursday after being convicted of assault, being armed with intent to steal and being in custody of goods obtained unlawfully.

He was sentenced to 15 months in jail with a non-parole period of 11 months.

He had also been convicted of stealing from a supermarket at St Leonards on October 21 last year and of stealing from three shops in Manly on November 3.

Police said Richards alighted from a bus at the southbound bus stop on Pittwater Rd at Brookvale at 9.25pm on November 28, picked up an empty beer bottle, smashed it on a metal seat and then threatened three 19-year-old Mona Vale men. Richards lunged at one of them with the broken bottle but missed him, at which point the three fled but not before one of them had dropped his wallet.

Members of the Northern Beach Street Policing Team conduction Operation Bus Safe responded immediately and found Richards hiding in bushes nearby. The wallet was in his possession.

Richards was also sentenced yesterday for the stealing offences at Manly and St Leonards to be served concurrently with the main sentence.

In August 1996, Richards was sentenced to seven years in jail for the manslaughter of Gordon Mills in Mills’ home at West Ryde in March 1994. He was given a non-parole period of four years and six months.
