Seven-year-old golfing prodigy Ruby Kavanagh to tee off at US Kids Golf World Championship
SHE’S the golf prodigy who likely has a better game than you do. She drives the ball 140m and has a handicap of 36. The best bit? She’s only 7. VIDEO
A PROMISING seven-year-old golfer with an impressive drive of 140m has qualified for the US Kids Golf World Championship for a second time.
Ruby Kavanagh, of Manly, has been playing the game since she was two and is the youngest member of Manly Golf Club.
Her handicap is an impressive 36 and her best score off 18 holes is 41 stableford points, which she reached late last year.
Ruby’s dad Luke, 34, said she participated at the competition in Pinehurst, North Carolina, last year and her game had improved again in recent months.
“I honestly believe this year she has a massive chance of winning,” Mr Kavanagh said.
“She has a new coach who has concentrated on the mental aspect of her game.
“Traditional thinking is all about what’s on your scorecard and your rival’s scorecard. Now we hide the scorecard from her so there are no distractions.
“She is now better able to concentrate on having fun and doing her best.”
He said last year both himself and his wife and younger daughter Luella, 4, who also likes to hit a few golf balls, went with Ruby to the US event, mainly because they’d never had a big family holiday before.
But after Ruby qualified for this year’s tournament her dad said it was too expensive to go again.
“She was really shattered when I told her, but now she’s getting winning scores I’ve changed my mind and I really think she deserves to be there,” said Mr Kavanagh, a carpenter.
“I’m working my backside off trying to get her there and have booked the flights.”
This time it will just be Mr Kavanagh and Ruby going and he has set up a Go Fund Me site to raise money to cover Ruby’s flights and accommodation.
