Double rescue: Teens save woman knocked into rock pool and man who collapses at bus stop
THESE school kids aren’t looking for trouble, but they keep finding it, after rescuing two northern beaches residents in separate incidents.
IT was a case of being in the right place at the right time for these teenagers who came to the rescue of two people in two separate emergencies on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The first involved a woman who was knocked into North Narrabeen rock pool fully dressed, handbag and all, by a large wave.
The second, about 10 days later, involved an elderly man with diabetes, who collapsed at a bus stop.
Lachlan McCann, 17, from Collaroy and Daniel Deal, 16, from Dee Why, were at both incidents, while fellow Narrabeen Sports High pupil Shaylyn O’Mara, 17, from Narrabeen, was involved in the rock pool rescue.
“We don’t go looking for people to help, I guess it was just lucky we were there at the right time,” said Lachlan, who is in Year 12.
The trio were swimming laps after school during a recent period of high swells, when the woman, in her late 50s, was knocked into the pool by a huge wave.
“This wave hit the wall and then came over. It surprised her,” said Lachlan.
The three pupils swam over and helped her out — she was shaken, embarrassed but uninjured.
In the second incident, Lachlan and Daniel were at a bus stop in Narrabeen on the way to the gym when a man with a walking stick appeared to start “jumping”. He then fell and cut his head.
“He was bleeding quite badly, but was waving $5 saying he was diabetic and asking us to get something sugary from the cafe for him.”
Lachlan ran to the cafe to buy a brownie.
They waited until he felt a little better and helped him to a nearby seat, while another passer-by called an ambulance, because his cut was bleeding excessively.
Lachlan said while the incident was a little shocking it was a “good feeling” to be able to help.
