MEET the Australian Open of Surfing’s sole crossover star. Give Hawaiian Kalani David a board and chances are he’ll find a way to make good use of it on virtually any surface.
Remarkably, the 18-year-old is a pro surfer as well as pro skateboarder.
While other surfers at the AOS can use their downtime to check out the skateboarding — and vice versa for skaters — David is juggling a busy schedule.
After learning to surf from the age of one, before taking to a skateboard when he was five, David has been putting in extraordinary hours for both sports.
“The travelling does get a bit hectic but I love it, for sure,” he said.
“I go through moods where I like surfing more than I do skating and sometimes I like skating more, but I like both of them equally.”
Kalani’s typical daily training routine — when he’s not competing — includes two hours of general fitness, five hours of surfing and two and-a-half hours of skateboarding.
“Skateboarding is a must for me. It’s always a must for me every day, no matter what I’m doing,” he said.
Kalani said about one year ago he trialled just doing one sport on the pro circuit — which was surfing — but he regretted it and soon reverted to doing both.
Asked if he would once again focus on just one board discipline in the future, Kalani said: “I’m very unsure ... I’ve been unsure my whole life.”
