Why I love my suburb is a new series written by Sydneysiders about their patch. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian reveals why she moved to Northbridge and her favourite things about living in the area.

When did you move to this suburb and why?

I moved to this suburb two years ago because I was keen to have a garden. I have a veggie patch that is very small and basic but I take great pleasure in tending it whenever I have time.

What do you like most about living there?

It is so close to everything, but it also has a wonderful feeling of community. One of the best things about living in this area is being able to hear the sounds of kookaburras and other natural wildlife.

Gladys Berejiklian remembers catching her first fish in Northbridge as a 7-year-old Brownie. Here she is with her troop (6th from the left in the back row with her hand on the back of the chair).

What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?

If I ever have free time on the weekend, I try to go on one of the beautiful bushwalks that are nearby. Connecting to nature is very relaxing and peaceful. It is also amazing that we have such a variety of flora and fauna here.

What is your favourite cafe/restaurant/bar?

I couldn’t possibly choose! We are spoiled for choice.

What is your best memory of the area?

When I was a Brownie at seven years old age I remember catching my first fish in Northbridge.

What do you wish you could change about your suburb?

I wouldn’t change anything about it — I love my suburb the way it is.

What do you tell people about Northbridge?

The one thing I tell everyone about my suburb is that, even though it is close to the city, it is calm and peaceful.

What is the best thing about Northbridge?

I love my suburb because it gives me a peaceful home and a community environment. I also love its beautiful sense of history — from the historic suspension bridge to the naming of the local streets.

What is the best gift you received recently?

My dad gave me something sentimental on Father’s Day. I was touched because it was supposed to be a day for him, but he gave me a gift instead!

What is the most interesting place you’ve travelled to recently?

Because of my job I get to visit some amazing places in NSW. Recently I enjoyed visiting Gulgong in the Central West and the Rock in the Riverina.

What books do you have on your bedside table?

A biography of Leonardo da Vinci and Hugh Mackay’s most recent book.

The last meal that truly impressed you?

Nothing beats my mum’s cooking. She cooks up a storm for me every Saturday.
