Why I love my suburb is a new series written by Sydneysiders. Writer and actor Susie Youssef tells us about her favourite parts of Newtown and her addiction to tuna sandwiches.
When did you move to this suburb?
I moved to Newtown at the beginning of 2018 because I have an addiction to tuna sandwiches, Thai food and traffic.
What do you like most about living here?
The Tuna Sandwich from 212 Blu on Australia St (Rhys Nicholson introduced me to this sandwich and it is excellent/becoming a problem for me).
What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?
I enjoy eating butter and chutney samples at Carriageworks markets.
What is your favourite café/restaurant/bar?
212 Blu (that tuna sandwich) and Arcadia Liquors (although technically Redfern is one of my favourite spots - great drinks, excellent music and pickles. My favourite things)
What is your best memory from living in this area?
I haven’t been here long enough but in the future I hope I’ll be old and yelling at skateboarders from the balcony of the Newtown terrace house I own and remembering the days of renting.
Do you have a favourite park or outdoor space?
I think Camperdown Cemetery is spooky but beautiful.
What do you wish you could change about your suburb?
I wish I had a parking permit but I do keep fit moving my car every two hours.
What do you tell other people about your suburb?
It’s a place where The Jam Man is not a local DJ but a man who actually sells jam and seeing a wizard walking a ferret is just a typical Sunday afternoon.
What is the best thing your suburb offers you?
Newtown has the best hairdresser — Noddy’s on King. And also those 212 Blu tuna sandwiches.
