Amber Sherlock has been a television journalist for 20 years, the last 11 years for the Nine Network. She currently presents the weather on Nine News Sydney alongside Peter Overton and Cameron Williams and also presents Nine’s national 3pm program, Nine News Now. She lives in Mosman with her husband, Chris, and two children, Piper, 8 and Zac, 4.
1. When did you move to this suburb and why?
My husband and I moved here in 2009 for a sea change. We were both working demanding jobs and we were keen to be by the beach. Chris grew up in Mosman and has always loved it.
2. What do you like most about living there?
Definitely Balmoral Beach. It’s amazing we can live so close to the city, and yet have one of the world’s most beautiful beaches on our doorstep. I also love the village feel of Mosman and we have met some wonderful local families who are now some of our best friends.
3. What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?
We love getting outdoors — whether it’s the beach, the park, going for a bike ride or taking our dog, Teddy, for a walk. We also love entertaining, so we regularly have people over for barbecues. On a Friday or Saturday night, we often go to a local restaurant for dinner.
4. What is your favourite cafe/restaurant/bar and why?
I love Il Perugino in Avenue Rd. I have been going there for over 20 years, even before I lived in Mosman! It’s a wonderful, locally owned and run restaurant with a great ambience and beautiful food. For a few drinks, you can’t go past the Buena Vista. Other notable mentions include Fourth Village, the Hunter and Tobikiri.

5. What is your favourite Mosman memory?
I drove home from work during a summer heatwave, picked up my kids (who were already in their pyjamas) and we drove to the beach for a swim. It was such a magical evening and they always talk about it.
6. Do you have a favourite park or outdoor space and if so why?
I love Clifton Gardens or Balmoral playground, because it’s near the water but enclosed enough that the kids can run around safely.
7. What do you wish you could change about your suburb?
Parking is always an issue in summer — have you ever tried to park at Balmoral on a public holiday?
8. What do you tell other people about your suburb?
It’s close to everything — the city, the zoo, the beach, restaurants, parks.
9. What is the best gift you’ve received recently?
I received some native Australian seedlings for National Tree Day which we planted in my parent’s garden in the Southern Highlands. I hope my kids will appreciate seeing them grow each time we visit.
10. What is the most interesting place you’ve travelled to recently?
We went to Japan last year and we all loved it. We stayed in Hakuba, Kyoto and Tokyo. Everything was amazing — from the skiing in Hakuba, to the beautiful homes and temples in Kyoto, to the craziness of Tokyo including the ninja house, the robot restaurant and the karaoke!
11. What books do you have on your bedside table?
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriaty and Teacher by Gabbie Stroud.
12. The last meal that truly impressed you?
Any meal with dumplings impresses me. Especially Xiao Long Bao — my favourite!
13. What worries you about society?
The rise of social media worries me — especially for my kids. While it’s an important part of my job, I worry about navigating it for teenagers.
14. What comforts you about society today?
The kindest of strangers. I am an ambassador for several charities and I am always blown away by the generosity of the community.
