New clearways, parking restrictions planned for busy north shore roads

Four of the north shore’s busiest roads will have new clearways, weekend parking restrictions and no stopping zones under plans to reduce congestion.

The restrictions will apply to the Pacific Hwy through Chatswood.

New clearways, weekend parking restrictions and no stopping zones are set to be rolled out along four of the busiest roads on the north shore.

Roads and Maritime Services said the new restrictions on the Pacific Hwy, Fullers Rd, Milwood Ave and Delhi Rd are aimed at improving travel time and reducing heavy congestion.

Plans show extended clearways would apply along the Pacific Hwy between Fullers Rd in Chatswood and Boundary St in Roseville.

The restrictions would make it illegal to park a vehicle in the zone from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays.

Traffic data shows the section of road carries an average of 57,490 vehicles a day.

The current clearways only apply in weekday peak periods from 3pm to 7pm and 6am to 9am.

The plans show new clearways would also be added on both sides of Fullers Rd, Milwood Ave and Delhi Rd between Chatswood and North Ryde.

The 4.5km thoroughfare has a mix of one and two lanes for traffic in both directions.

Business owners said the move could result in more cars parking in nearby residential streets on weekends.

Staff at Fullers Road Beauty Salon told the North Shore Times high rise development in Chatswood and North Ryde were potential factors for the increase in congestion.

Staff said the opening of the Metro North West rail line in May had not reduced heavy traffic through the area.

RMS said the clearways would involve removing metered parking spaces and truck zones on the Pacific Hwy.

No Stopping restrictions would also apply near the intersection of Fullers Rd and the Pacific Hwy.

Business owners credited increased traffic in the area to the rise of residential developments in North Ryde and Chatswood.

The only vehicles allowed to park in clearways would be buses, taxis dropping off/picking up passengers, emergency vehicles and postal vehicles accessing a post box.

“The proposed clearways would change the ability to park or pick up and drop off family, friends and deliveries along these roads,” RMS added.

“If you do not have a driveway, garage or carport on your property, local streets are available for you to park during the clearway hours, subject to any parking restrictions.”

The restrictions are open for feedback and if approved are due to apply from September.

The measures would be funded through the State Government’s $121 million Clearways Program.
