State of emergency declared in fire-ravaged NSW

Evacuation centres are being set up on Sydney’s north shore in response to a “catastrophic fire danger” warning issued across the region.

The Rural Fire Service has raised the bushfire threat level for the Greater Sydney region on Tuesday due to worsening weather conditions gripping NSW.

The RFS said residents living near bushland areas are most at risk from the combination of high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity.

The RFS has encouraged residents to remain vigilant by taking the following steps:

— Activate your bushfire emergency plan.

— For your survival, leaving early is the only option.

— Leave bush fire prone areas the night before or early in the day – do not wait and see what happens.

— Make a decision about when you will leave, where you will go, how you will get there and when you will return.
