THE 2018 summer concert series Twilight at Taronga starts on Friday and six shows have already sold out, including the Neil and Liam Finn and Bjorn Again performances.
Singer-songwriter Tim Freedman will be one of the special guests for the RocKwiz LIVE Salutes LOVE Valentine’s Day-themed shows on February 14 and 15.
Freedman was previously in the Twilight at Taronga line-up in 2014, when his band The Whitlams opened the annual showcase.
“I did a wonderful show with the whole band. It was just a beautiful, still evening with a happy crowd, plenty of dancing and we played well,” he said.
“I have fond memories of it. It’s a wonderful spot for concerts and obviously it’s set up correctly — the audience getting the view and the band looking into the hill — it’s a very special setting.”
Freedman will perform on his own and with Wendy Matthews at Twilight, as well as reprising his role on the RocKwiz panel.
“I haven’t done a live show with them before — I’ve just been on the show a couple of times over the years and I’ve always enjoyed it,” he said.
“They’re such a good-natured crew and there are always lots of laughs. It’s pretty off-the-cuff.
“It should be unedited and probably a bit more uncensored than the TV version.
“I think if people like watching it on TV, they’re going to love it live.”
Freedman is also looking forward to The Whitlams’ 25th anniversary pub tour this year, which will feature a selection from the band’s six albums.
He said the key to the band’s success and longevity was “taking the foot off the pedal” in the past six years, including performing less often.
“We still have pretty high standards for our live shows: with a thousand shows under our belt, we are very proud of our standards,” Freedman said.
The RocKwiz shows at Twilight at Taronga are a follow-up to the team’s national tour of regional Australia in mid-2017.
From Burnie to Cairns and Geraldton to Tamworth, RocKwiz played sold-out shows and received standing ovations across the country.
At Twilight, Julia, Brian, Dugald and the RocKwiz Orkestra will be joined by special guests Freedman, Wendy Matthews, Alex Lahey and Fraser A. Gorman to celebrate love.
As usual, Brian will coax people in the audience to play key roles in the evening’s shenanigans.
Crowd-pleasing segments will include: Who Can It Be Now, Million Dollar Riff, The Furious Five and Contestant Karaoke.
Twilight’s opening weekend features performances by The Jezabels, Dan Sultan and The Teskey Brothers. The concert series continues until March 17.
Tickets include free same-day zoo entry and free Twilight ferry and bus services. Twilight at Taronga is an all-ages event.
