MOTHERS with babies can benefit from a free support group starting in the Kirribilli Centre next month.

The eight-week “Being Mums” program starts on February 13 and coincides with a free, four-week baby massage course.

The support group aims to help women with the challenges of motherhood, such as stress and isolation.

Jo Harvey, programs and marketing manager, said the centre had achieved great success with the “fantastic” program in past years.

“This group is wonderful for meeting other mums, gaining support and friendships,” she said.

“It’s good for mums to be around other mums who understand how they feel.

“We have a professional in the field facilitating the group who helps the mums with coping skills.

“Morning tea is provided and mums can also attend the mums and baby massage beforehand.

“Our baby and mums massage course is run by a midwife and it really helps with bonding.”

Ms Harvey said the massage course was designed to teach mothers a simple massage sequence and explore how to interpret your baby’s subtle cues.

“Baby massage has many benefits, including: supporting infant digestion, improving babies’ quality of sleep and supporting maternal-infant bonding,” she said.

Ms Harvey encouraged mothers to take up the unique opportunity to join the centre’s support group and flourish in a positive, friendly environment.

“Mums who have been to our group have really benefited: their moods improve, they are happier and they enjoy the experience,” she said. “Most mums still continue to attend the centre for other playgroup activities.”

Ms Harvey said bookings were essential for both programs. Call 9922 4428 or visit thekirribillicentre.org.
