COOLING down with an ice cream on a hot summer’s day is a luxury enjoyed by many — and now your dogs can enjoy it too, thanks to Emma Martin-Fisher.
The founder of FurFresh, a bite-sized company on a mission to provide healthy eating alternatives for pets, has developed and started to distribute tail-wagging icy treats called Pupsicles.
The 34-year-old came up with the handmade idea when she noticed how warm it was going to be at the 2017 Festival of Mosman: Pet’s Day Out in October.
Ms Martin-Fisher said she used carrots instead of popsicle sticks to ensure the consumption of her treats were harmless for quick eating, hungry canines.
“I feel compelled to educate people about what’s in their dogs’ food and I really want to be able to offer owners a healthy option for their pets,” she said.
“I wanted to create an alternative, right from their every day meals through to the treats people give their furry family members.
“Now, you can go to the beach and buy an ice cream for yourself and buy a Pupsicle for your dog too.”
Ms Martin-Fisher, who stocks two flavours of Pupsicles — a banana, peanut butter and yoghurt option, and a beef bone broth and barley treat — said she was inspired to help change the way owners feed their dogs after noticing a market gap.
“The rates in cancer has gone up in dogs, and there are so many skin and food allergies — it got me thinking what has fundamentally changed over the years and it all comes down to food,” she said.
“It’s like having a sick baby — you don’t want to be taking them to the doctor all the time and not knowing why they’re reacting a certain way, and I honestly think a lot of people need to start looking at the foods they feed their pets.”
Ms Martin-Fisher, who works at FurFresh single-handedly, said expanding to a commercial kitchen, hiring help and stocking her product in retail outlets was the next goal on her agenda.
She also hoped to tinker with her range of every day meals, and said she was open to client recipe suggestions.
