Children learn to read by reading!

Research shows that learning to read is one of the most

important factors in school success. Early exposure to books and stories greatly contributes to

success in early literacy and in developing fluent, motivated and critical readers.

Research also shows that early intervention, as needed, impacts on reading success.

This philosophy underpins the Middle Harbour Reading Tutor Program — a tradition of over 20 years.

It is designed to provide daily additional practice for children in Years 1 and 2 who benefit from supplemental support in learning to read.

The school is seeking volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with individual students. No

previous experience is necessary.

After a little practice the program is easy to follow. All sessions are supervised by the Learning Support Teacher who provides assistance as necessary.

The program recognises the importance of meaning making — comprehension, as well as a

strong foundation in phonics. Students participate in regular, short but frequent opportunities to practise reading strategies and skills with a supportive adult.

Daily delivery relies very largely on the goodwill of some 40+ volunteers from the school and

local community. Tutors will find it a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

“Being part of the Reading Tutor Program has given me much joy and it is so rewarding to

know the difference I have made in a child’s life,” one reading tutor said.

If you can spare half an hour or one hour on any Tuesday — Friday between 9 and 10am and like the idea of helping a delightful 6-8 year old master one of life’s most valuable skills, please leave your name and contact details at Middle Harbour Public School Office — 02 9953 6232.

A Working with Children Check number is required — this is attained by completing a short

application of personal details. We are more than happy to assist in this process.

Carole Jaye is the relieving principal at Middle Harbour Public School.
