POLICE say they have identified the young owner of a severed finger found in the Balmoral Beach toilet block.
They said it unfortunately appears to have got trapped between the door and the frame, causing the injury but there are no suspicious circumstances.
This morning police sought help from Facebook to find the owner of what they then thought could be either be a finger or a toe
“It’s a partially severed digit. It’s very strange,” said Chief Inspector Dean Lindley from North Sydney police.
“It’s not often you get body parts handed in off the street.”
The curious case unfolded when a member of the public discovered the finger just before Christmas.
The digit was examined by a forensic pathologist who confirmed it is human but couldn’t state for certain whether it is a finger or toe.
In a bid to nail down the owner police conducted a prints test but there was no match on the system. However, without a toeprint data base the search could have been futile.
No witnesses or victim had come forward and there was no CCTV of any incidents.
Detectives had exhausted all avenues in the joint operation and appealed to the public for information.
Inspector Lindley said police had been concerned and wanted to find out what happened.
“There’s nothing nefarious attached to it,” he said.
He had said the digit didn’t look like it was severed with a knife.
When asked where police were storing the exhibit he joked that it was “in the fridge” next to the sandwiches.
The finger/toe is believed to be resting in the morgue.
