A DOG was rushed to the vets after chowing down on a hidden cannabis stash, police said.

The pooch was taken for a walk in an exclusive Sydney harbourside park and decided to stick his nose into a bush.

He didn’t listen to calls to get a move on and had to be dragged out of the bush at Mosman’s Reid Park by his owner.

That afternoon the dog’s temperament took a turn for the worse.

“The owner noticed that his dog was behaving strangely, barking at his water bowl, running in circles, being very active, then very sleepy within minutes,” North Sydney police said.

“At dinner time the dog apparently wolfed the food down in record time before becoming very sedate.”

The owner was concerned the dog had picked up a dangerous tick but nothing was found on his skin. When the pet started getting bloodshot eyes and vomiting he was immediately taken to the vet.

A blood test revealed an “extreme” level of cannabis, which came as a huge surprise to the owner.

He was exposed as a literal drug dog.

The owner reported the incident to the police and officers searched the park as they suspected the pooch had come across someone’s hiding spot on his walk. Nothing was found during the search.

The incident happened last month and the dog is understood to have made a full recovery after a good night’s rest.

Chief Inspector Dean Lindley from North Sydney police said it was an unusual case.

“I’ve never come across a stoned dog before in my life,” he said.
