A YEAR 6 student at Mosman Prep aims to help the environment next week with his “Spring Break” car pool initiative.
Will Rumsby, 11, with help from his brother Josh, 9, and dad, Ian, has been handing out flyers to encourage the school community to jump on board and car pool in spring.
His campaign starts on September 1 and he hopes it will reduce carbon emissions from students being driven to school.
Will’s initiative is an offshoot of a science assignment, where students were tasked with choosing an area of interest and devising a proposal to save energy and make a difference to the environment.
Will conducted a survey outside his school during the morning drop-off on August 4 and counted 108 cars which carried only 125 students.
“That’s 1.15 students per car,” he said.
“We found that 150kg of CO2 was pumped into the atmosphere in just one hour and we found that 54L of fuel was used to get to school.
“That’s 14,040L per year.”
Will hopes his car pool idea will take off in the wider Mosman community and extend beyond spring.
“Sharing a ride will kind of mean there are more kids in one car, which means less kids in another car or no kids in another car,” he said.
“This will lower the emission rates a lot and the fuel used to get to school.”
