Micro-winery creating reds in the middle of Sydney
THERE’s no need to travel to the Hunter Valley to get great wine as Sydney’s Tom Munro is creating reds right here in the city.

A MICRO-WINERY is creating its own vintages in the heart of the lower north shore.
English winemaker Tom Munro has been making his own brews from scratch since he was nine years old.
And when love took him to a new life in Neutral Bay he kept up the tradition.
“I had a basic winery in the cellar of our house in north London. That’s when I started and I’ve been making wine ever since,” he said.
“My dad was my guinea pig. He had to keep a straight face while trying all sorts of weird and wonderful brews I would make.”
Mr Munro drives out to a vineyard near Mudgee to buy the grapes and he trucks them back to Sydney.
He takes the batch to his friend’s photography studio in Artarmon where the grapes are crushed by foot and hand and then left to ferment.
When its ready, the wine is taken to the Northside Produce Market in Civic Park for pressing. After several months of maturation it’s brought back to the market again for bottling; sealed with a cork and wax.
“Red wine making is a very straight forward process,” Mr Munro said.
“When it comes down to it you don’t need a big fancy winery and lots of equipment for doing a small amount.”
Mr Munro has delighted visitors to the North Sydney market by bringing the wine making process to them.
He wants to put people in touch with the natural origins of their food and is part of a global movement of small inner-city winemakers.
