EVER come home after a long day at work and wanted a beer or glass of wine but your fridge was empty? Then Winerun.com is here to save the day.

People in northern Sydney have access to the new online service offering a selection of 70 wines, craft beers and spirits and cigarettes — plus a few sweet treats like ice cream and Pringles — which can be delivered to your door within 30 minutes.

Founded by Daniel Sofo, the man behind Firefly at Neutral Bay and The Italian at Willoughby, WineRun is available to residents who live in one of 26 suburbs, from the harbour to Castle Cove, from the Spit Bridge to Lane Cove West.

WineRun has four scooters on hand to zip around the area, promising delivery within 30 minutes of an order being placed.

“It’s pretty ambitious,” Sofo said. “The beautiful thing about it is, it’s not like pizza or Thai food — you don’t have the chef to cook it.

“I’m hoping that we can stay true to our promise.”

Orders — which are placed through the WineRun website — open at 12pm every day, with deliveries from 5.30pm until 9.45pm.

“Everything is on the website. (You) purely pay and order online,” Sofo said.

“We’ve designed it so that it’s four buttons from when you first qualify with your postcode to check out.”

Sofo said he came up with the idea for Winerun around a year ago when his fiance was reluctant to go into a bottle shop.

“I hadn’t realised that perhaps women felt uncomfortable going in to that sort of environment,” he said.

“I quizzed her a bit more and all of her friends felt the same way about it. That started the idea.

“I started to look around and see who else was doing it and saw a few great businesses overseas in New York and Los Angeles.

Sofo says there is a demand for the service because more people are having house parties.

“I noticed there were a few people doing it in Australia as well but none on this side (Sydney’s north shore).

“I’ve been operating bars and restaurants on this side for a little while now so I consider it my heartland.

“And I thought good old north shore has missed out again, better do something about that.

“When I first setup Firefly everyone was like “Thank god you’re here. We’re sick of having to go over to the city to have anything nice”.”

Sofo had to go through a rigorous liquor licensing process to get the service up-and-running.

“It’s pretty tough. It took me a long time to get it through,” he said.

“There’s an age qualification on the website and our drivers check ID.”

Sofo is confident there will be strong demand for the service.

“I feel like people are going to be having more house parties, socialising more at home, having more dinner parties and this seems like the sort of service that will accommodate that,” he said.
