A FORMER management consultant from Mosman has been treading the boards off Broadway and dreams of playing Richard III.

“Watch this space!” Ali Kennedy Scott said from her home in New York City.

The actor, writer and theatre-maker still visits family in Mosman every year and misses them and the beautiful environment.

But Kennedy Scott is relishing her burgeoning performing arts career in the Big Apple. She has been living in the US for almost three years.

One of her earliest theatre memories as a child is of Shakespeare by the Sea on Balmoral Beach.

Kennedy Scott caught the acting bug when she was living in Mosman, attending the Actors Centre Australia part-time and working 60-plus hours a week in her day job.

She was then accepted into the renowned Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England.

Kennedy Scott’s achievements include producing, performing and touring 10 seasons of her award-winning solo show, The Day the Sky Turned Black, based on interviews with survivors of Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires.

The New York Times called her play “enthralling” and she received nightly standing ovations the last time she performed it off Broadway.

Kennedy Scott also brought a high profile New York director in the audience to tears when she composed an improvised “verbal portrait” for her during the immersive play, A Serious Banquet.

“Months later we met again and she told me it was one of her favourite moments in the theatre,” she said.

“As they say, if you can make it in New York, you’ll make it anywhere.

“Living in a city like NYC offers unparalleled opportunities and a highly dense marketplace for the performing arts,” she said.

“I’ve been able to collaborate with artistic luminaries and now sit on the board of theatre company the Saratoga International Theatre Institute.

“It’s been an amazing journey. In less than three years I’ve joined two theatre companies, performed in more than 10 plays, shot multiple short films, performed alongside Tony nominees and Pulitzer Prize winners and learnt more than I could imagine.”

Among other projects, Kennedy Scott is writing a solo show about women in leadership, developing an immersive Greek tragedy and will play the devil in Calderon’s Two Dreams in La MaMa theatre off Broadway next year.

“La MaMa is an icon of the New York theatre scene, so I’m rather excited about it and playing the villain is my favourite kind of role!” she said.
