A Newcastle man is under police guard in hospital after an alleged pursuit along the Pacific Hwy on NSW’s mid north coast.

Highway patrol officers allegedly detected the driver speeding along the motorway at Cooperabung, just north of Port Macquarie, about 8.50am on Saturday.

When the vehicle allegedly failed to stop for police, a pursuit began.

Police deployed road spikes before the vehicle crashed and rolled over on Fernbank Creek Rd at Sancrox, west of Port Macquarie.

The driver, a 30-year-old Newcastle man, was treated for leg fractures and taken to Port Macquarie Hospital where he remains under police guard.

Southbound lanes of the Pacific Hwy were closed for hours because of the crash, creating lengthy delays for long weekend commuters.

It reopened for the afternoon.

Investigations were continuing.
