AUGUST is wine dinner month where across the peninsula Italian sparkling, big Australian reds and mystery tastings will be feted at four very different events.

Merivale group sommelier Franck Moreau rolls out his third degustation wine dinner at The Newport.

Winter chills are perfect for big Coonawarra reds, so Mr Moreau has teamed with Wynn’s Estate’s chief wine maker Sue Holder for the pop-up event.

“We have selected six or seven wines, but the focus will be reds,” Franck Moreau said.

Executive chef Jordan Toft will match the Coonawarra wines with a four-course meal for 40.

Events have been popular with customers, Mr Moreau said.

“Customers asked if we were going to hold degustation wine dinners,” he said.

The winter series has already showcased Henschke and Leeuwin Estate. The final event will be a fun and educational tour of European wines on September 20.

The degustation dinners are a benchmark for future events once The Newport opens its new restaurant.

Balgowlah RSL’s stylish venue, The Wine Room, will be showcasing premium Taylors wine on August 16.

Master of wine Neil Hadley has seven wines including two from the Clare Valley — the 2013 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2012 The Pioneer Shiraz — and a mystery wine.

Wines will be matched with head chef Shane Rider’s five-course dinner.

Small Italian eatery Cinque has enlisted Ormeggio group sommelier Luke Collard for its wine-tasting nights. Mr Collard will introduce wine lovers to 10 regional Italian wines on each occasion.

“Italian wine isn’t just chianti and barolo,” Mr Collard said.

“These nights are a fantastic way of trying something different.”

Mr Collard has divided Italy geographically into four regions for each event.

“We will be starting with the north where they climate is cooler and move down to the south where it is hot and dry. The last class will focus on the islands,” he said.

Northern Italian wine tasting will be held in the Mona Vale eatery on August 8. Subsequent events take place in early September, October and November.

Q Station’s winter series of wine degustation dinners at the Boilerhouse returns in August.

New executive chef James Green will match five courses with wines from Robert Oatley Vineyards.

Nights are billed as Tales from a Winemaker and a Chef, so guests can expect a night of good food and wine, and a few interesting stories to liven up the evening.

The wine dinner is on August 9. Tickets are $99 a head. Bookings, 9466 1500.
