WE’RE going on a burger hunt, and we’re going to catch a big one. Apologies for the appalling mashup of Michael Rosen’s fantastic kids’ book We’re Going On A Bear Hunt.
The ‘Big One’ is the two-handed grease trap that goes under the guest burger of the month title at Originals Burger Co in Brookvale.
July’s meaty offering is Uncle Frank’s Philly Cheese Steak. And there it is … sitting on red and white checked paper, all greasy and glistening — American consumerism at its finest.
This stack of beef brisket, OG pattie, fried onions, chilli, pepperjack cheese sauce, ‘hi-melt’ cheese and pickles in an Originals bun, is chef Josh Franco’s tribute to hot dog vendor Pat Olivieri. Pat’s claim to fame according to Philadelphia’s official tourist site — is cheese steak stuffed in an Italian roll. The rest is history.
The a la carte trained chef just couldn’t help himself.
Originals already has a philly cheese steak jaffle on the breakfast menu, so why not take it to the next level?
So the guest burger is one of three groaning on the table alongside a portion of loaded super crunchy fries.
These burgers should come with a health warning, and shouldn’t be eaten every day. But if you like yours big, messy, salty, dripping with cheese and falling out of the bun, then you’re going to love them.
It gets the thumbs up from my junior burger tester. So does the buttermilk fried chicken burger which also comes with bacon, cheese, barbecue sauce and OG’s blue cheese sauce.
Words fail me with the basket of upsized super-crunch fries topped with shallots, bacon bits, American cheese, gravy and OG’s house dressing.
I think they’re a sensory overload, but then I’m not the audience. Much better is the Originals burger. It’s a classic American style burger without the excess.
Just a free-range grass fed beef patty, cheese, pickles, tomato, onion, lettuce, tomato sauce, mustard and OG’s house dressing. It’s positively demure.
The beaches has a distinct lack of American or any big name chefs who’ve decided to flip fancy burgers in this neck of the woods.
Chur Burger had a short-lived stay at Manly Wharf Hotel, but apart from the fast-food favourites — Maccas is just up the road — Originals with its industrial fitout, OTT burgers and American rock music is Brookvale’s little bit of Brooklyn.
