Northern Beaches’ newest restaurant

The emergence of a northern beaches-based hospitality business from the financial doldrums continues with a new restaurant and bar throwing open its doors at a local golf club.

“The Mona Social” is The Boathouse Group’s latest offering — bringing to 10 the number of eateries under its ever-widening umbrella.

On the first floor of the Mona Vale Golf Club, management said it was going for an “old-school” private country club look — that’s open to the public.

It has views across the popular public golf course towards the southern end of Mona Vale Beach and then Warriewood Beach beyond.

And management says it has an a la carte menu, put together by The Boathouse Group’s head of culinary, Mark La Brooy and its head chef, Cameron Johnston, which “reinvents bistro classics”.

The Mona Social even has its own signature triple-decker club sandwich which is recommended to have with: The Swingers Lager”, a new brew sold in collaboration with 4-Pines Brewery.

The business is expanding under new chief executive Antony “AJ” Jones and head of commercial and marketing Ben Collis, who work out of the group’s head office in the Manly Pavilion – another Boathouse bar and eatery – on Manly Cove.

They came on board to help the commercial property development company, owned by brothers Ben and Jono Isaac, which took over full ownership of The Boathouse Group last year.

As well as the Mona Vale eatery, Jones and Collis also oversee the other venues, including two in Manly — at Shelly Beach and the Manly Pavilion — as well as Barrenjoey House at Palm Beach, Moby Dicks at Whale Beach and on the water on the beach at Balmoral.

They’re hoping The Mona Social will become a hub for locals as well as attract visitors for across Sydney.

The bistro menu includes venison tartare, octopus and beef tongue skewers, chargrilled prawns while the bar has classics including cheeseburgers and the club sandwich.

Patrons will have an area to watch TV sport as well as pool tables and beers on tap. There is even a in-house golf simulator and tap beer.

“Think Boathouse meets country club,” Mr Jones said.

“Guests will walk in and immediately know that this is a Boathouse venue through its

quintessential abundance of beautiful interiors, but rather than being a coastal theme it’ll have more of an inviting country feel with warm timber tones and lush greenery.”

Mona Vale Golf Club manager, Andy Hugill, said while the venue was separate to the club, it was complementary to the golfing experience.

“We are thrilled to have the team from The Boathouse Group launching a brand-new venue concept above our clubhouse, it will bring a whole new dimension to Mona Vale hospitality options, along with our newly renovated clubhouse and cafe.”

Mr La Brooy, said they had “lots of fun building menus fit for the fast-paced style of service”

“We’ve strived to strike a balance that is both sophisticated and accessible with our two dining formats.”

It’s open every day, for lunch and dinner, from 11.30am “till late”.
