A man has been charged with attempting to murder a police officer with a knife on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Two male uniformed general duties officers had been sent to a home at North Narrabeen on Wednesday evening after police received a “concern for welfare call”.

Police will allege in court that Carlin Rookes, 35, who lived at the address in Wimbledon Ave, “lunged” at one of the officers with a “large” knife.

Manly Local Court heard that Mr Rookes was currently on bail related to separate alleged domestic violence offences at Randwick in May.

The officer was not injured by the knife in the latest incident but police said he sustained a head wound in the struggle with the alleged offender.

Mr Rookes appeared in Manly court on Thursday afternoon to face one count each of attempted murder; use an offensive weapon to prevent police investigation and; armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

No pleas were entered.

Police made a detention application to Magistrate Margaret McGlynn to keep the man in custody ahead of his next court appearance.

It was not opposed by Mr Rookes’ Legal Aid solicitor, Fiona Hadlington. He did not apply for bail.

“(There is an) allegation he lunged at a police officer with a knife,” Ms McGlynn said before she formally granted the police detention application.

Police stated in court papers that Mr Rookes was allegedly armed with a “large knife”.

Ms McGlynn also heard that Mr Rookes, who appeared in court via video from Manly police station, was currently on bail related to alleged domestic violence offences against a woman at Randwick in May.

A hearing into charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and stalk/intimidate are set down for hearing at Waverley Local Court on December 13.

His solicitor asked Ms McGlynn if she could note on court documents that Mr Rookes had current mental health issues.

“He is high risk and stressed, and needs to be seen,” Ms Hadlington said.

Mr Rookes is back before Downing Centre Local Court on July 30.
