A popular northern beaches’ sporting club that was left heartbroken after its headquarters was destroyed by a massive blaze more than two years ago, is set to rise from the ashes.

Images and plans for a new sports amenities block on the shore of Narrabeen Lagoon, which will accommodate the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club, have been revealed.

Northern Beaches Council is now seeking public comment on the new building that has been designed with input from the 113-year-old sailing club that also lost 24 boats in the fire on November 27, 2021.

The block in Jamieson Park at the southern end of the lagoon, will also include a kiosk or cafe as well as views of the lake from a covered deck or verandah.

Plans also show expanded boat storage will be provided along space for the club rooms, public toilets and a “multipurpose indoor space”.

IN the days after the fire the not-for-profit sailing club set up a public fundraising campaign to help replace the sail boats as well as two motorised safety boats and thousands of dollars in spare parts and equipment that could not be salvaged.

Fourteen boats owned by the club were in the building along with another 10 boats belonging to members. By January 2022, $18,000 had been donated by the public and other Sydney sailing clubs leant the club boats so its could restart its sailing season.

An adjoining private stand-up paddleboard and kayak hire business, Jamieson Park Paddle, was also left reeling by the dramatic Saturday night blaze. About 30 firefighters managed to get the fire under control by about 6.30pm, but not before large sections of the roof and walls collapsed.

Shattered sailing club captain Jonny Harrison said, at the time, that the club, which had been in the premises for about 40 years, had about 120 members and had just signed up 30 children for a learn to sail program over summer of 2021-22.

On its website the council invites input from the northern beaches’ community.

“In 2022 we asked you for your input on what the building design should include so that it meets the needs of our community and the clubs who use the site,” it said.

“Since that time, we’ve been working closely with the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club and the appointed architects to produce concept plans that capture all of the main elements of what we heard from the initial community engagement.
