Testing times for Northern Beaches triathlete Emma Jeffcoat at Olympic venue

It was a result to forget but a race for Emma Jeffcoat to remember for the lessons she has learned ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

Raging heatwave raises Tokyo Olympics worries

Tokyo Olympic hopeful Emma Jeffcoat has survived — but barely — her first taste of the course she hopes to race at the 2020 Games as brutal conditions took a high toll on the elite field in the test event.

Jeffcoat, from Collaroy, said she was “cooked” after racing the swim, bike and run course in torrid conditions in Tokyo, giving an insight into the type of survival skills needed to win a medal next year.

“I felt like I was melting from the inside,” Jeffcoat said.

“It was extreme on the heat stress indicator.

“At 5am it was 31C and it felt like 37C.

“I felt like I was cooking from the inside out.

“Even the water was over 30 degrees.

“I never felt I had the chance to recover. I got quite light headed.”

While her 44th place in a race shortened due to the heat was forgettable, Jeffcoat said she has learned invaluable lessons.

“Racing in this type of heat has taught me some important things,” the 24-year-old added.

“The more you do in these conditions the more your body will get used to it so that’s important.”
