Three of Warringah Aquatic Centre’s best young swimmers have made a huge splash at the 2019 School Sport Australia National Swimming Championships in Melbourne.
Jaslyn Plummer (10), Milla Lawrence (11) and Zara Kasprowicz (12) dominated for NSW at the elite week-long competition, claiming a whopping 18 medals between them.
Each of the girls went into nationals with high hopes after qualifying to represent NSW with some stellar results at the state championships in April.
The girls were right to be confident as Zara (one gold, two silver, one bronze) and Jaslyn (four gold, one bronze) quickly became accustomed to the podium.
Milla rounded out the girls’ sensational results by eclipsing the competition in almost every race to come away with seven gold and two silver medals.
Milla’s Dad Sean said the girls started the meet off strong and just kept getting better as the week went on.
“The girls were all over the moon,” he said.
“Milla was the first one up for a final. She was in lane one and was a bit of an outsider but she just went ballistic.
“From there, that was it. They all just started doing bigger and better times and were really happy with how they went.
“All three of them did even better than they expected.”
Despite the pressure of the occasion, Mr Lawrence said the girls thrived among their elite competition.
“It’s a big meet,” he said.
“The crowd was really vocal and there was a lot of atmosphere throughout the entire week, which is something kids this age aren’t really used to.
“It creates a lot of tension but the girls seemed to respond to it really well. It was a lot more exciting than a normal meet and it was a good experience for all of them.”
The girls have been honing their craft together at Warringah for three years under coach Tim Lane.
Mr Lawrence added that Lane deserved a lot of credit for their nationals success.
“Tim’s a calm and laid-back coach but he’s very technique focused,” he said.
“His aim is to teach the girls how to do it properly, rather than just putting in the hard yards.
“As a result their strokes are all very smooth and energy efficient, which really shows at a competition like this.”
Along with the girls’ success, Warringah was also well represented in the boys category in the form of 10-year-old Noah McLaren.
Noah rounded out Warringah’s medal-winners from the competition when he claimed a thrilling gold medal for NSW in the 200 metre freestyle relay.
