How can Queensland selectors ignore Cherry-Evans for Origin?

WHEN Queensland State of Origin selectors meet this week, the name Daly Cherry-Evans must be front and centre.

MEMO Kevin Walters, Darren Lockyer and Gene Miles: What more does Sea Eagles skipper Daly Cherry-Evans have to do to get a start in the Queensland side for the deciding State of Origin game?

These are the three Maroons selectors who will meet this week to toss around names to replace the injured Johnathan Thurston — and after his absolutely dominant performance in Sunday’s 35-18 win over the Sharks on Sunday, Cherry-Evans should be top of the list.

“I don’t know why they are second guessing, they should just pick him, and put him straight in,” said former champion Sea Eagles and NSW Origin five-eighth Cliffy Lyons.

“He has been playing well and I reckon he has been the form halfback this season.”

And Lyons said Cherry-Evans totally ran the show against the Sharks.

“He was awesome,” he said.

After not mentioning Cherry-Evans as a candidate to replace Thurston late last week, coach Walters may finally be changing his stance following the weekend round.

“He has been playing some good footy, hasn’t he,” Walter told the Big Sports Breakfast rado program on Monday.

“And his match yesterday (against the Sharks) just put some icing on the cake I suppose for him, he has been in really good touch.

“So we have got some decisions to make around that position and he is obviously a candidate that’s really putting his hand up.”

He also named Michael Morgan and Ben Hunt as players who will come into calculations.

And Walters revealed he will consult the senior Queensland senior players, including Thurston, about who they believe should come into the side.

“But at the end of the day the decision will be the selectors,” Walters said.
