Single in Sydney: Can making a vision board help find you love?

THIS week Sarah asks, can some simple kindergarten-style cutting and sticking land her a man? Her friends seem to think so,

JOURNALIST Sarah Swain has been single (but dating) for longer than she cares to remember. That’s because it’s tough out there, as any single will tell you.

So to bring hope to others across the city, she’s sharing her no-holds-barred adventures on the Sydney single scene every week.

I HAVE A VISION

A FEW people have asked me recently if I’ve ‘visualised’ my man.

The conversation was along the lines of: ‘Have you tried Tinder? Have you been speed dating? Have you visualised your man? ”

Erm, excuse me?

They weren’t actually talking about some new dating app.

No, they actually did mean to ask if I tried to make a figment of my imagination actually come true.

Surprisingly, I haven’t

Because imagining something and making it happen is something generally confined to Disney movies.

And I would have laughed it off as another dating fad — I mean what next, love spells? — if the friends who suggested it weren’t actually quite clever and lovely people.

One’s a life coach called Mrs Mojo, who’s helped me with other stuff in my life, and the other is a friend who’s stayed positive despite battling cancer.

So I thought I’d at least Google it. And apparently, it’s a thing.

There are heaps of articles, including one which tells you to close your eyes and imagine being on a tropical island with a man who asks you to pass him the sunscreen, which is basically something I do every morning on the ferry on the way to work.

Others had more practical options like making list of 25 characteristics you want your man to have, and posting it on your mirror so you can see it daily.

Another way suggestion is to make a vision board.

Which is basically an old fashioned version of Pinterest.

And luckily, I remembered I have another life coach friend (I seem to get on well with them) Vicky Jones from The Element Coach, who could help.

She’s a big believer in vision boards — and runs workshops on making them.

She said she has clients have also found love after creating their own.

But HOW can cutting out a lot of pretty pictures from magazines and gluing them together be anything more than an enjoyable crafternoon?

“As the saying goes, a picture says a thousand words and our mind develops such a strong bond with the visuals it creates,” she tells me.

“Creating a vision board is one of the best ways to program your reticular activation system (which Google tells me is the ‘gateway to the conscious awareness’) which acts as a radio which only picks up information or situations that are in line with your vision.

Seeing your vision board every day fine tunes your radio.

“Whether you want, a husband, dream career or a healthy life, the vision board is designed to create an emotional response which drives action,” she said.

She advised me to collect holiday brochures, real estate brochures and magazines as well as, Pinterest quotes to create my board.

(And presumably some photos of men too. I wonder if posting a photo of Kiefer Sutherland on my board will bring him to Australia to meet me?)

She also told me to put a photo of myself looking happy in the middle.

I should be specific — and she advised me to also write a ‘vision statement’ about the details of the life I want, as if I already have it.

That's something which sounds familiar- I did it with dating coach Sarah Davis.

I was still sceptical.

And my work mate, Bev, said it was “a load of b*******” when I told her.

Sarah will need some of this.
Sarah will need some of this.

But Ms Jones is sure.

“They are very powerful and I have no doubt if you are clear about the sort of man you want, the kind of activities you will do together, the kinds of words that associate with him, you will manifest him,” she said.

Somebody pass me the scissors.
