Matt Preston’s search for the best bakery on the northern beaches had us drooling and now we can finally reveal who took out the region’s top gong.

Scotty’s Bakehouse, a popular eatery at Collaroy Plateau, was voted by Manly Daily readers as the best in the area.

Couple Scott and Nadia Woods, who have three kids — Charlie 12, Hudson 10 and eight-year-old Piper — bought the business 13 years ago.

Scott is a pastry chef and Nadia was a dental nurse before the northern beaches’ locals opened the doors to the bakery in the Augusta Shopping Centre on Veterans Pde.

Now, Nadia works behind the scenes, and behind the counter, doing much of the paperwork and looks after the business’ colourful social media accounts.

She told the Manly Daily that Scotty’s Bakehouse attract up to 400 customers a day, mostly locals and a sprinkling of tradies working in the area.

“We’ve got two schools across the road so we get a lot of parents dropping off and picking up.

“Then we’ve get the RSL War Vets down the road as well, so they’re always popping up.”

Nadia said the bakery covers a lot of bases with its products.

“We do a lot of stuff for kids. We’re quite popular for our pies and sausage rolls for the tradies and we do a lot birthday cakes and ‘image’ cake orders.

“I think we’re best known for the big selection we have.

“Not may bakeries have such a variety. We’ve got fresh cream products and all the traditional stuff like neenish tarts and eclairs, things like that.

“But we have started to get a big following for our birthday cakes as well. Lots of Firday and Saturday orders.

“All of our cakes are simply decorated, but they taste really good and I think we’re popular because of that and it’s affordable for families.”

Nadia praised their hardworking staff of 10 full-time and part-time staff including pastry chef Nick Cragg, who does the day shift and veteran Randall Smith, who prepares the pies and sausage rolls overnight and gets the shop ready to open in the morning.

And Nadia wanted to remind locals that they want to please their regular customers so much that sometimes open on public holiday and definitely open for coffee for a few hours on Christmas Day.

“It’s always a bit of fun.”
