After Matt Preston put out a call for nominations to name the northern beaches’ Best Brunch venue, the winner can now be revealed.
Thousands of readers across the region had two weeks to vote in our special online poll for their favourite brunch spot.
And the winner is the beautiful waterside Cottage Point Kiosk & Boat Hire at Cottage Point.
Trevor and Angela Wilson took over the business at 1 Notting Lane — the old general store — right at the confluence of Coal and Candle Creek and Cowan Creek, and surrounded by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, in October 2014.
They had just spent 10 years working in Europe, mainly crewing on luxury five-star superyachts. Trent was a captain and Angela a steward.
The Wilsons also worked in managing luxury villas as well as boat building and fleet management in the south of France.
Now they have a daughter, Sia, 5.
Trevor said many of the customers pull up to the nearby dock on their boats.
“We get a lot of boat-orientated clients because we’re one of the stops on the water through here.
“And we do get a lot of off the road traffic on weekends as well as the cyclists, the walkers and people going on picnics with the boat hire we have here as well.”
Trevor said brunch time, around 10am to 11am, gets pretty busy at the kiosk.
“The all-day haloumi stack (sauteed mushrooms, avocado, baby spinach, grilled halloumi, fried egg, tomato relish and pistachio dukkha on sour dough) and the corn fitters are the most popular menu items at the moment.
“It’s just simple cafe fare, but all our cakes and scones and everything are made in house.”
Trevor said he was thrilled to have been voted best brunch venue on the northern beaches, especially as the business had a down turn through COVID, even though they stayed open seven days a week for take aways for the locals and the boaties who were stranded during the Christmas lockdown.
Matt Preston said the search for Best Brunch was part of a Delicious Local push to help drive a food-led rebound from the effects of COVID.
“It’s clear from the vast number of nominations and votes we saw come in that local communities are rallying around their favourite eateries; supporting those food businesses who have done it tough over the past 12 months,” he said.
“That is exactly what we set out to achieve.”
