Mimmo’s Brookvale is an institution on the northern beaches and a worthy winner of our joint NewsLocal and Matt Preston best pizza competition.
The owners say the reason for its success is that the food is authentic, full of flavour, everything is cooked from scratch and it never changes.
Well-known couple Mary and Mimmo Lozito opened the Pittwater Rd restaurant and takeaway in 1973 and during that couple of decades they would see many stars come through the doors including Ian Moss, guitarist with Cold Chisel.
“At that time there were a lot of sound recording studios in Brookvale and they would come here to write their songs,” said one staffer who did not want to be named.
“Ian Moss was one who used to come here in the 80s.”
Before the restaurant, the space was a deli and fruit shop, run by Mary’s parents.
Those who started going there for the pizza in the 70s, now bring their children and grandchildren, say staff.
Not only are the customers loyal but so is the chef.
Gordon Maguire has worked at Mimmo's for 26 years.
“Everything is prepped from scratch including the ground beef and the chicken which are cooked in the ovens here before being chopped up for the pizza,” said one staff member.
“The pizzas haven’t changed. They are traditional and the way they should be.”
One of the most popular pizzas on the menu is the Brookie Special, of course, which has mushrooms, onion, capsicum, pineapple and bacon.
