THEY are experts in their fields, whether that be sport, business, fashion, politics or the law. They are the people whose opinions and actions we value and watch with sometimes envy, sometimes disdain and disagreement.

The Manly Daily staff debated over who should be on the list and where they should rank.

We considered their positions as role models and/or decision makers, starting from position 20 through to position 1. Today we list number 2 on our list.

All 20 will be listed on our website, manlydaily.com.au, over coming days with your opportunity to agree, disagree or suggest others who should be on the list of the most influential people on the peninsula.

He’s the top cop on the peninsula.

Northern Beaches Local Area Commander Dave Darcy, a police officer since 1982, manages about 250 uniformed and plain clothes officers from Manly to Palm Beach.

The plain speaking and forthright Superintendent has his office at Dee Why Police Station, but he’s often out visiting the area’s other stations at Manly, Frenchs Forest and Mona Vale.

After stints commanding police at Kings Cross and Bankstown, Superintendent Darcy, who has lived on the northern beaches since 1993, arrived to head the Manly Local Area Command in March 2008, before it merged with the existing Northern Beaches LAC in 2013.

One of his first self-appointed tasks was to clean up The Corso, then notorious for wild drunken behaviour after pub closing time, by declaring that alcohol-related crime was his number 1 priority.

He enlisted the co-operation of the local pubs, which introduced voluntary early closing times and promised not to serve extremely intoxicated patrons. As a result, the number of alcohol-related assaults began to fall.

Superintendent Darcy also instigated a crackdown on alcohol-fuelled hooligan behaviour on buses travelling through the northern beaches. He ordered officers to travel on buses, such as the notorious “Hell 90” express and patrol troublesome bus stops.

Earlier this year he told Northern Beaches Council members they should not just rely on his officers to police unruly drinkers on the East Esplanade in Manly, but to better manage the park.

Superintendent Darcy, who has completed his masters in criminology, regularly writes and studies papers on policing and has had stints in policy and planning in police headquarters, knows the value of his officers forging relationships with their communities.

He encourages police to organise sporting events, barbecues with vulnerable young people and take part in community activities such as fun runs.

Superintendent Darcy is also determined to see a drop in the rate of drink driving offences on the northern beaches.

Tomorrow morning the number 1 most influential person on the northern beaches at manlydaily.com.au.
