#3 Scott Penn: Manly Sea Eagles owner
IF not for Scott Penn, the Manly Sea Eagles would be shot birds.
The club owner and chairman revealed to the Manly Daily in November 2016 that his family company had poured more than $10 million into the club they love over the previous decade.
And there is no doubt that if not for Penn’s continued generous support, the NRL club on the northern beaches with such a proud tradition would not have survived.
It takes a special kind of passion and loyalty to buy into a rugby league club, because it sure isn’t a way to make money.
Penn and his father Rick have stuck solid with the club through the tough times — and haven’t there been some of those in recent times.
The Sea Eagles were wrongly implicated in an investigation into alleged NRL match-fixing for which they were totally cleared.
Then the club was found guilty by the NRL of salary cap breaches and fined $750,000 as well as having $330,000 taken from their salary cap this season and next season.
Penn went on to the front foot and has insisted the club had not paid one cent more than the contracted amounts to players.
Through all the dramas Penn has had to regularly deny rumours he was preparing to sell the club — with a fascinating array of colourful buyers supposedly ready to pounce.
“I don’t know where all this is coming from, we are totally committed to the club,” Penn said.
“We brought in some new shareholders, new investors, about two years ago to help with capital because we have plans for the club.|
“And we’re all totally committed to the future.”
Penn has also been at the forefront of exciting plans to give the rundown Brookvale Oval the redevelopment it desperately needs.
But he has run into constant roadblocks from the State Liberal Government.
Tomorrow morning the most influential person ranked 2 on our list will be revealed at manlydaily.com.au.
