A man and his wife, both aged 70, were still being treated in Royal North Shore Hospital over the weekend after the collision on Mona Vale Rd at Ingleside on Thursday afternoon.
Authorities closed the road for about four hours to allow emergency service officers to free the trapped couple and for the specialist police Crash Investigation Unit to start their examination of the scene,
The collision occurred at about 2.20pm near the intersection with Tumburra St. A third car suffered some damage. Its female driver was not injured.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man and woman in a VW hatchback as Fire and Rescue NSW officers worked to free them from he wreckage of their car.
It took until about 3pm to free both occupants before they were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
The 44-year-old male driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital as a precaution. He has since been discharged.
A RNS spokesman said on Friday afternoon that the elderly couple were still in hospital and still in a stable condition.
Northern Beaches Police set up a crime scene at the collision site and closed Mona Vale Rd, between Powderworks Rd and Forest Way, for several hours.
The incident comes just a month after another head-on collision on the same stretch of Mona Vale Rd — just 500m away from Thursday’s incident — which left two people in hospital and man questioned by police.
A half-cabin motor cruiser was on the back of a trailer being towed by a sedan when it struck an oncoming ute on July 9. Police were told the trailer was “fishtailing” before it collided with the Mitsubishi Triton, near the intersection with Addison Rd, about 12.40pm.
The ute’s driver, a 53-year-old man, was trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle. It took about 30 minutes for emergency services officers to free him.
NSW Ambulance confirmed the man suffered a serious laceration to his head.
A woman in the ute also received a head wound and was stabilised for possible neck and spinal injuries.
