Liberal Rory Amon claims he is victim of ‘dirty tricks’ campaign in run up to election on December 4

A Northern Beaches Council election candidate says he is the second Liberal to be targeted in a ‘dirty tricks’ campaign in the run up to polling day on Saturday.

A Liberal councillor says he is a victim of “dirty tricks” in the run up to the council election on Saturday.

Cr Rory Amon has accused a “network of shadowy Left front groups” of stealing his election posters and defacing them.

On one corflute, the word ‘fascist’ was written on Cr Amon’s head, along with a speech bubble and the words, ‘I love Tony Abbott’.

Other posters had drawings of male genitalia scribbled on them.

“There were 10 coflutes taken and I’ve seen about six put up in Narrabeen,” Cr Amon said.

“It’s dirty tricks from the left.”

However, he said he had not contacted the police about the matter because he didn’t want to waste their time.

“I’m not going to waste police time by asking them to look into this childish behaviour,” he said.

Cr Amon, who is the Liberal candidate for Pittwater, said signs have also gone up in the area about Liberal Federal MP Jason Falinski. The federal election will be held before May next year.

“If you have something worth saying, put your name to it,” he said in a Facebook post.

Cr Amon has called for all political parties to condemn these actions.

Miranda Korzy, who is The Greens candidate for Pittwater, said any suggestion anyone from her party had anything to do with the vandalising of Cr Amon’s posters was “scuttlebutt”.

“It’s not an issue for the Greens, we are not involved,” she said.

“I would not condone defacing a candidate’s conflutes.”

Anyo Geddes from Mackellar Rising, which will shortly be announcing an independent candidate to stand against Mr Falinski in the federal election next year, said she strongly condemned such behaviour and denied it was anything to do with her group, saying they were not even involved in the local election campaign.

“Mackellar Rising is focussed on federal issues and we don’t have anything to do with local council elections,” she said.

“Mackellar Rising does not condone vandalism or defacing of other people’s property.

“We are running a positive campaign and we have lots of real photos and videos from real people on our website, Facebook and Instagram to convey our information.”

She said the group has branding for any of its messages.

Last week Liberal candidate for Manly and new mum Georgie Ryburn’s was the target of a defamatory leaflet drop.

She has reported the incident to the police.

The Liberal’s Northern Beaches Council Campaign Manager Philip Longley, said the perpetrator of that deplorable attack should be named and shamed.

“Astroturfing campaigns are clearly a real threat we’re up against,” he said,

“There is a level of uncertainty about what is next until the face or even faces of these unendorsed vile attacks is revealed.”
