A magistrate has described as “galactically stupid” a drunk man who jumped on the bonnet of a police car and kicked in its front windscreen while it was parked outside Manly Police Station.

Benjamin Bevins, 24, leapt on to the front of the fully marked police car, while out drinking on a Sunday night, in full view of police CCTV cameras.

Bevins, who lives with his parents in Manly Vale, then stomped on the windscreen of the car, with the letters NB37 painted on the hood, causing more than $1700 damage.

In a reference to a famous quote by a character played by Tom Cruise in the Hollywood film A Few Good Men — “Should we or should we not follow the advice of the galactically stupid! “ — Manly Local Court magistrate Christopher Longley criticised Bevins for his actions.

“Why you would walk across six lanes of traffic to jump on the bonnet of a police car, parked outside a police station, I do not know,” Mr Longley said.

“They do have blue lights on them.”

In a facts sheet tendered court on Wednesday, police said Bevins was walking south on Belgrave St, opposite the police station, at about 9pm on December 9, before deciding to run across the road and pull himself up on to the bonnet of the parked car.

“(Bevins) used his left leg to perform a stomping motion kick on the front off-side window” leaving the vehicle “not roadworthy”.

Police said a witness standing about 10m away called out “Oi” before Bevins jumped down and ran off into Belgrave Park.

The incident was captured on CCTV. Officers were also able to match fingerprints on the bonnet with those they had on record for Bevins.

Police questioned Bevins on December 19 where he said he had “no recollection of the events”.

When shown CCTV footage he told police: “That’s me, that’s 100 per cent me”.

Through a solicitor Bevins told Mr Longley that he had a problem with alcohol consumption.

Mr Longley convicted Bevins on a charge of intentionally or recklessly damage property and sentenced him to a Conditional Release Order and that he be supervised by Community Corrections for 12 months.

He also ordered that Bevins abstain from consuming alcohol for 12 months.
