Narrabeen RSL fears cancelling weekend acts following orders for breaching noise complaints

A northern beaches RSL club, popular for outdoor live music gigs, fears it must cancel weekend acts after being hit with stringent orders for breaching noise limits — but the venue has vowed to fight the decision, which follows a neighbour complaint.

A RSL club popular for its outdoor live music gigs fears it must cancel some weekend acts after being hit with stringent orders for breaching noise limits.

The licensing authority stepped in after a neighbour complained about late night noise coming from Narrabeen RSL.

Liquor & Gaming NSW said the neighbour managed to get three other neighbours to authorise the complaint, lodged in November 2017, about bands playing in the club’s auditorium on weeknights.

They also complained about the noise made by patrons leaving the club, in Nareen Pde, late at night.

A club employee complained that the so-called “LA10” order effectively means the club cannot stage outside daytime gigs at its popular Sunk cocktail bar. It must also install a noise limiter on all inside gigs when bands use amplifiers.

The employee was so upset by the order she wrote an angry notice on a blackboard placed inside the club. A photograph of the notice was posted on social media via employee Claire Ginty’s Facebook page. Ms Ginty’s original post has already been shared more than 1000 times and has attracted close to 300 comments from club supporters.

In her Facebook post Ms Ginty said: “A single, formal noise complaint backed up by state government legislation has the ability to change forever how we meet, eat, drink, dance, sing and support each other as a community.

“The RSL has been operational longer than any of the surrounding residents. The club has supported the Narrabeen community for almost 65 years.”

Liquor & Gaming said the noise conditions do not prevent the club from holding outdoor entertainment or letting patrons sit outside.

The club was contacted but management declined to comment because it was still considering an appeal.
