Foodie Friday: Trendy breakfasts on Sydney’s northern beaches

FORGET bacon and egg rolls. These trendy breakfasts give the first meal of the day a workover.

BORED with the same old breakfast? New Manly cafe Hakan’s opened in June and is serving a mash up of Australian, Nepalese and Turkish food.

Owner Hakan Cinar has reworked porridge, switching oats for brown rice and swapping sweet for savoury.

The Rialto Square cafe has a sweet version, but it also has an edgy take on the breakfast staple.

Hakan’s savoury porridge is made with brown rice, pumpkin and shiitake mushroom.

The savoury porridge is made with brown rice which is flavoured with grated apple, ginger, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cardamom.

Shiitake mushrooms, tahini, pumpkin and an additional fried egg push the healthy and tasty dish into unfamiliar territory.

Shakshuka, the breakfast dish of last year, and a favourite of celebrity Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi is still a big hit with Fuel Espresso customers.

Since Shak Blitz and Mark Howlett opened their Brookvale espresso bar/cafe in June 2013, they’ve had no shortage of customers who come in for the slow-cooked tomato, pepper and poached egg dish.

Shakshuka is pepped up with a pinch of harissa and served with toasted Sonoma sourdough and homemade labaneh.

The star of the dish is the fresh yoghurt cheese which takes 48 hours to make.

It’s finished with a drizzle of olive oil.

Splat Cafe has one breakfast dish that’s easier to eat than it is to say.

The Queenscliff cafe has its own version (and spelling) of huevos rancheros.

Cafe co-owner Pippa Hall-Johnston calls the classic dish ouevos rancheros and has finetuned it over nine years.

It started with her father, who first tasted the dish in Mexico 50 years ago, she said.

Cafe Splat’s version comes with poached eggs, chorizo from Freshwater Village Butchery, tomatoes, kidney beans and red peppers.

Three different chillies give it a kick. There’s also a vegetarian option, it comes without chorizo.
