A shocking image has emerged on the northern beaches of a live pigeon impaled on what appears to be a wooden shish kebab skewer.

The alarming picture was taken at a popular park for children in Dee Why on Friday.

Simone Brennan-Jones, who captured the image of the bird on her smartphone, said the bird can still, amazingly, fly.

Ms Brennan-Jones told the Manly Daily that the impaled pigeon has been regularly seen recently in Walter Gors Park in Howard Ave, just east of the Dee Why town centre.

She does not know how the bird became impaled.

“I reported it to an animal carer and she said that lots of people know about it, but are unable to catch it as it can still fly,” Ms Brennan-Jones said.

“It’s horrible, so sad.”

The wildlife rescue group WIRES, confirmed that it had received two reports from the public about the impaled pigeon — the first was phoned in two weeks ago.

WIRES spokesman John Grant said the first person who saw the bird a fortnight ago witnessed it flutter from the ground to a picnic table and then on to an umbrella and then fly off.

“Our volunteer has been out twice to locate the bird,” Mr Grant said. “But each time they get to the location the bird had already flown away.

“If it is still mobile, it will be hard to catch.

“We are keen for people who see the pigeon to call WIRES, or the RSPCA, as soon as possible so we can get someone out there and bring the bird in for veterinary help.”

Call WIRES on 1300-0WIRES or 1300-094737.
