Christopher Sy: Taekwondo coach hit with fresh child sex charge

A Sydney taekwondo coach who is alleged to have groomed and sexually assaulted a teen has been hit with a fresh child sex charge.

A Sydney taekwondo teacher accused of grooming and sexually abusing a teenage girl he was coaching has been hit with fresh charges.

Police allege Christopher Palmares Sy, 36, sexually groomed a student between March and May last year, and on at least one occasion allegedly drugged the student before sexually abusing her.

The occupational therapist and managing director of an occupational therapy services business allegedly met the child while running martial arts classes at a Brookvale taekwondo studio before abusing her in locations in Sydney’s North, including the locked bedroom in his home, according to police.

In May last year, he was charged with grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, supplying prohibited drug (small quantity to child under 16 years by adult), two counts of intentionally sexually touching a child between 10 and 16 years-old, and three counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16 years-old.

The Maroubra man, formerly of Seaforth, has now been hit with fresh charges, including having sexual intercourse with a child aged between 14 and 16 years-old and intentionally sexually touching a child between ten and 16 years old.

The circumstances around these new charges, laid on February 10, are not yet known.

Sy, who is on strict conditional bail, was set to make his first appearance for the new charges at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, however was excused from appearing in person at court.

He has not yet entered a plea to any of the charges.

Sy will next appear in court in April.
