Details have emerged of a proposed $9.8 million makeover of a popular 100-year-old northern beaches’ retail complex.

A microbrewery will be part of a swanky new restaurant within the refurbished Hills Marketplace at Terrey Hills — famous for its flower market — planning documents reveal.

The owners of the site on Mona Vale Rd want to add two new buildings to accommodate a garden centre and rural supplies outlet as well as a new restaurant to seat 250 diners.

A “small area for ancillary brewing equipment” will be part of the new licenced eatery, according to documents lodged with a development application to Northern Beaches Council.

A former, smaller, restaurant at the site, Piemonte Cafe, closed about two years ago. An existing cafe, Tastebuds, is still operating.

Its owners also want to make minor alterations and additions on the ground floor of an existing building, including to the area occupied by the existing garden centre, the cafe and the space once occupied by Piemonte Cafe restaurant and slightly reconfigure and expand the flower shop.

Extra parking is also planned.

The documents show that the microbrewery will produce “craft” beers.

“The operation of the brewing equipment is to provide theatre/ambience within the restaurant that will be an ancillary feature of the overall operation of the new restaurant,” the documents stated.

As well as “Hills, The Flower Market”, the site also includes about a dozen business leaseholders including garden machinery and pool supplies outlets, equestrian equipment and a beauty salon.

On its website Hills Marketplace management said that the Hills family used the property, from 1923, to produce flowers, which they sold direct to the public.

A two-exhibiion period to collect public submissions closed on July 18. Seven submissions were lodged, including one from the Terrey Hills Progress Association which stated while it was not opposed to the upgrade “we ask that any development is in keeping with the local area and does not have a negative impact on local residents”.

Association president Paul Davenport noted that as the marketplace was close to the new 84-bed Wyvern Private Hospital now under construction nearby, increased traffic may have an impact on several schools in the area.

“We ask that further work be carried out to minimise the impact of noise on local residents

given that both the Terrey Hills Tavern and Miramare Gardens function centre are in close

proximity.”

The owners have been contacted for comment.
