NAPLAN minimum standards increased as program undergoes changes

Three primary schools and six secondary schools from the northern beaches have landed in the top 100 for NAPLAN results in NSW, according to the latest data.

Assessed on reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy skills, the NAPLAN exams (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) are rolled out annually to Years three, five, seven and nine – with some northern beaches schools making a name for themselves as the highest achievers in the state.

John Colet School, an independent school in Belrose has secured its top spot again with the highest NAPLAN result for primary schools on the northern beaches, coming eighth in NSW.

Both Sydney Japanese International School and German International School located in Terry Hills closely followed as second and third on the beaches respectively, with St Rose Catholic Primary School in Collaroy Plateau placing fourth and Kambora Public School in Davidson placing fifth.

Headmaster of John Colet School, Julian Wilcock, says that while the school’s NAPLAN results are very good, it’s not their only focus.

“The most important thing for a primary school is the development of children personally and academically,” said Mr Wilcock.

“What we really strive for is that they’re confident and challenged in many different areas so when they come to NAPLAN they find it relatively simple.”

He added that John Colet has a very big arts focus, with one of the school’s defining features being their implementation of Shakespearean performances, as well as a mindfulness program the school’s been running since it started almost 40 years ago.

“Teaching the children how to give attention and focus and help with anxiety – that has a big impact on their academics.”

“We don’t want to be known as just the NAPLAN school … primary school should be more than that. It’s about making children happy and confident, and good people.”

Public selective school Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus has earned itself the top spot on the northern beaches yet again, coming 11th in the state overall, followed by fellow college campus NBSC Mackellar Girls who came second in the area.

Combined primary and secondary school German International School in Terry Hills placed third, with non-government schools St Luke’s Grammar School in Dee Why and Pittwater House in Collaroy placing fourth and fifth respectively for secondary schools.

NBSC Manly Campus’ Deputy Principal, Marisa Carolan, says that in preparation for NAPLAN, the school has been practising inferential reading skills with a focus on their Year nine students.

“We’re always working to improve our results and our students are very focused.” said Ms Carolan.

“We’ve been doing something calling ‘Reading Detectives’ – a day for all the year nines … teaching the students all about nuances and how to read between the lines.”

“Our numeracy results are always fantastic, it’s really making sure we retain a focus on literacy and give support where it’s needed.”

Principal of NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus Christine Del Gallo said she is thoroughly delighted with Mackellar Girls’ result, detailing the school’s holistic approach to NAPLAN.

“There is a culture in the school, where numeracy and literacy is a responsibility of every teacher; we have a whole school approach.” said Ms Gallo.

“There’s a large amount of analysis on the students’ strengths and weaknesses, and we target those areas where those students individually and as a whole year group need extra support.”
