Six secondary schools on the northern beaches are in the top 100 NAPLAN high school performers in NSW, according to the latest data.
Just one local school made it into the top 100 primary schools in the first comprehensive measure of the state of education since the Covid pandemic began.
But several secondary and primary schools on the northern beaches were identified as “high progress” schools because their students showed above-average progress across “domains” including writing, numeracy and reading compared to those of similar backgrounds and starting scores – in the 2021 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) results.
They include the Northern Beaches Secondary College (NBSC) – Manly Selective Campus, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School at Narrabeen and St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School at Balgowlah.
For the first time, parents, students and school leaders can now see how their school has performed in comparison to others from 2019 to 2021.
The My School website was updated on Wednesday with individual schools’ NAPLAN showing some institutions had performed very well despite two years of interrupted learning.
The government data was collected from NAPLAN tests taken last year.
NBSC Campus, a public selective school, was the top northern beaches performer once again.
It was also ninth best in NSW based on analysis of the data provided by the Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority.
The measure compares overall average scores between 2019 and 2021 and does not track student progress between Year 7 and Year 9 nor take into account socio-economic advantage. It is based on average scaled scores for each school across reading, writing, grammar, spelling and numeracy.
The German International School Sydney was the next best performing local high school which made it to 40 on the top 100 list.
Next were NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus (75), Pittwater House t Collaroy (76) , St Luke’s Grammar School at Dee Why (79) and Covenant Christian School at Belrose (93).
The John Colet School at Belrose was ranked number four in the top 100 primary schools.
Centre for independent Studies education expert Glenn Fahey said the strong results from private schools, at least at a primary school level, was reflected in research on remote learning.
“Our survey of parents showed those who were most committed and most comfortable with homeschooling tended to be from more advantaged areas,” he said.
“We also know students in non-government schools spend up to five hours a week more studying compared to those in government schools.”
At a high school level, he said some students who could sit down and focus on their work independently were more likely to do better.
“Students who spent more time studying than normal were also better during the homeschooling period,” he said.
