One of the Macarthur region’s leading independent high schools is planning to super-size up with some amazing additions for students.
Wollondilly Anglican College revealed its long-term grand expansion plans, which include a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a performing arts centre and sporting fields complete with a grandstand.
Wollondilly Anglican College headmaster Dr Stuart Quarmby said the school bought the neighbouring land two years ago in a bid to “future proof” itself.
“We have been blessed with rapid growth over the years,” Dr Quarmby said.
“It’s not really about classroom space. It is, in a sense, to take all the students we can and give them more space.”
Former prime minister John Howard opened the college in 2004, and it now houses more than 1000 students from pre-kindergarten to Year 12.
Dr Quarmby said the proposed sporting facilities at the “destination school” would be welcomed by all.
“We loathe to call ourselves a sporting school because we do other things well, but sport is a massive part of being a country school,” he said.
A “quality” agricultural program is also planned as part of the proposed expansion.
Dr Quarmby said the first priority of the expansion, if approved, would be to deliver a second entrance to the school in a bid to ease traffic concerns.
The headmaster also made emphasised the rural look and feel of the college would not be compromised.
