Camden’s once notorious toxic no-go zone has started a new chapter, with news the 2.66ha former Camden High School site has officially been sold.

Listed by Colliers International in October, the John St site swiftly became the heritage town’s hottest piece of real estate with an asking price north of $23 million.

Colliers International metro sales executive Nick Estephen told the Chronicle the site had been sold to a consortium.

“We are very happy with the outcome of the sale to a consortium led by experienced seniors living operator, HT Retirement,” Mr Estephen said.

The Chronicle wasunable to find out more details about the consortium at the time of publication.

Previous owners AEH Group bought the site in 2007 for $7.5 million, demolishing the old high school and remediating the site at significant cost.

It was planned and approved to deliver Camden Central Lifestyle Estate, a multimillion-dollar retirement precinct incorporating 15 buildings, 162 seniors’ living apartments, a 76-bed retirement aged care facility, motel and medical centre.

AEH Group chief operating officer Michael Rabey told the Chronicle last year a number of groups were interested in the site.

“AEH recently market tested the separate portion of the land that sits on the opposite side of the site to the main part of Camden central, in order to assist fund remediating the land, as was always intended,” Mr Rabey said.

“We had such strong interest from various groups for both this separate block, and the whole site, that the owners could no longer ignore the option of finding a new owner for the whole site to take it forward.

“AEH maintains its view that the current approved DA provides an optimum use of the site and is committed to the sales process and assisting to take the project to completion once the new owners are established.”
