A 36-year-old man will face his fate after he admitted to sending indecent material to someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Troy Harold Harris, 36, appeared in Picton Court on Thursday after being charged with sending a nude picture to a minor.

The court heard the majority of the charges laid against Harris were withdrawn on February 9 after he pleaded guilty to one charge of using a carriage service to send indecent material to a person under 16 years old.

Harris had previously been charged with four counts of using a carriage service to send indecent material to someone he believed was a 14-year-old girl, but the court heard only one charge will proceed to sentencing.

According to police, the Glen Alpine resident used a carriage service to send indecent material to a fictitious person whom he believed to be a teen girl between November 2020 and June last year.

Police allege Harris sent a photo of exposed genitals to the “underage recipient” during that time.

Harris was arrested by the specialist Child Exploitation Internet Police squad. He was initially refused bail in August last year after a local court magistrate determined it would create unacceptable risk to release him on bail, however the court documents show he was eventually granted bail on September 15.

As part of his bail conditions, Harris is directed not to contact anyone under the age of 18 and not to access the internet.

Picton court heard on Thursday the matter is ready to proceed to sentencing in the local court for the single remaining charge.

The court heard the maximum penalty for sending indecent material to a child is seven years imprisonment.

Harris will return to Picton court on April 14 to learn his fate.
