Four angels from Mt Gilead Estate Retirement Village have led an heartwarming fundraising effort, raising almost $10,000 for the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Unit.
Through trivia nights, plant sales, raffles, a pool competition and a morning tea attended by several hundred people, retirees Cheryl Reynolds, Veronica Oliver, Glenis Ryan and Neryl Abbey raised $9000 across a three-month period.
Cheryl Reynolds, one of the fundraising co-ordinators, said the generosity of the village residents was overwhelming.
“A lot of people here in the village have been touched by cancer, either through their family or themselves,” she said.
“As we saw more of the residents here need treatment at the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Unit, we thought why don’t we support them.
“It’s a great feeling knowing we have helped in some small way.”
A cheque was presented to Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre director Associate Professor Stephen Della-Fiorentina last Thursday, who said the money would be dedicated to improved patient care.
“We are grateful for any donation that allows us to purchase equipment or services to enhance patient care, improve patient safety or provide patient education,” he said.
“We will be looking at enhanced shading and cover from sun and rain in the outside waiting area and to put in window blinds for patients receiving chemotherapy.”
The Macarthur Cancer Therapy Unit has been rated the best cancer centre unit in the state for the past three years and saw about 1700 new patients last year alone.
